Any artist can write a song tomorrow that sounds like it belongs in the 80’s. Well, Basic Elements have done the complete opposite. The Arizona five piece had written and performed a collection of tracks doused with retro synths, driving basslines and tight disco fusion drumming over a six-year span from 1984 to 1990. The founding members disbanded and moved on to various professions in the ensuing thirty years only to recently resurrect the group and the tracks that AZ natives from that era grew to love.
The timing for Basic Elements to reunite could not be better. Artists have and will always wear their influences on their sleeves in some fashion. As the saying goes, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. This line of thinking has seen various artists in 2020 look back to the 80’s for musical inspiration. Whether it’s The Killers deliberately cheesy triumphant mix of rock anthems from Imploding the Mirage or the Acid Synth laden disco hooks in Lady Gaga’s Rain On Me, the 80’s have resurfaced in a big way.
You would think the single ‘Hide’ from Basic Elements is yet another track to take the thirty-year-old music canon and give it a modern spin. Think again, Hide is a song written thirty-five years ago and has catapulted itself into the 21st century firing on all cylinders. Even the haunting refrain ‘Hide from your leader’ is prophetic given the current political climate across the globe.
Basic Elements sound like they have achieved a sophisticated spin on their favourite era, something that successful artists everywhere are desperate to replicate today, but it may because they have been sitting on a goldmine for so long.
